IBBFA Credentials
Five tiers of professional recognition — from entry-level certification to honorary fellowship. Each credential builds on the last, creating a clear pathway from new instructor to authorized examiner.
IBBFA (International Ballet Barre Fitness Association) offers five credential tiers for barre fitness instructors: Certified Barre Instructor (CBI) at $599, Specialty Certifications at $347–397, Board-Certified Principal Instructor at $1,497, Master Instructor at $2,997, and Fellow by invitation. Founded in 2008, IBBFA has certified over 5,000 instructors across 40+ countries. All credentials include scope-of-practice training, and credential holders maintain Active status through a $99/year registry maintenance fee — verifiable at ibbfa.org/verify. IBBFA credentials are recognized for continuing education credits by ACE, NASM, AFAA, PMA, ISSA, CanFitPro, and REPS. IBBFA maintains rigorous certification standards including Board Review examinations for advanced credentials.
Why IBBFA Certification Matters
Barre instruction has grown from a niche studio practice into one of the most popular group fitness formats worldwide. With that growth comes a critical question: how do employers, studios, and clients distinguish between a qualified instructor and someone who completed a weekend workshop?
IBBFA answers that question with a credentialing system modeled after the professional standards of organizations like ACE and NASM — not a single certificate, but a multi-tier hierarchy with ongoing maintenance requirements, public credential verification, and Board Review examinations for advanced designations.
Unlike single-certificate training programs, IBBFA certification means an instructor has demonstrated competency in anatomy, biomechanics, barre technique, class design, cueing, and — critically — scope-of-practice boundaries. IBBFA-certified instructors know when to modify, when to adapt, and when to refer a client to a healthcare professional.

Certified Barre Instructor (CBI)
The CBI is the foundation credential for barre fitness instruction. The comprehensive program covers anatomy and physiology, barre technique and methodology, class design and sequencing, cueing and communication, and scope-of-practice training with contraindication recognition.
Upon passing the certification examination, instructors receive an IBBFA Registry ID, a listing in the public instructor directory, and CEC credit recognition from seven major providers.
CBI Curriculum
- Anatomy & physiology for barre instruction
- Barre technique fundamentals and methodology
- Class design, sequencing, and programming
- Cueing, communication, and participant engagement
- Safety protocols and exercise modifications
- Scope-of-practice boundaries and referral guidelines
- Contraindication recognition for common conditions
- Certification examination
Specialty Certifications
Specialty certifications allow CBI holders to develop expertise in specific populations and formats. Each specialty deepens the instructor's knowledge in a focused area and adds a specialty designation to their registry profile.
Standalone specialties are $347–397 each. The Board-Certified Principal Track ($1,497) includes access to all four specialty modules — candidates must complete at least 2 of 4.
Four Specialty Disciplines
- Prenatal Barre ($347) — Safe instruction for prenatal and postnatal populations, trimester-specific modifications, and contraindication management
- Stretch & Tone ($347) — Flexibility-focused programming for seniors, injury modification, and low-impact populations
- Cardio Barre ($347) — High-energy cardio barre formats, heart rate management, and metabolic programming
- Advanced Barre ($397) — Complex choreography, advanced progressions, and performance-level technique
Board-Certified Principal Instructor
The Principal designation represents board-certified advanced mastery. It is IBBFA's flagship credential — the "gold within the gold standard." Principal Instructors have demonstrated comprehensive knowledge across all specialty areas and have passed a live Board Review examination with an IBBFA Master Instructor.
At $1,497, the Principal Track includes access to all four specialty modules (a $1,438+ standalone value), a Board Preparation session, and the comprehensive Board Review examination. Candidates must complete at least 2 of 4 specialties.

Non-payment results in "Lapsed" status. Credentials can be reactivated at any time by paying the current-year fee with no penalty.
